I originally posted this a few years ago, but it’s definitely one that I like to pull out of the vault again at holiday time. Cause it’s about liquor. And who DOESN’T need a cup of cheerful something or other at this time of the year??!!
You know it’s gonna be a good day when you’re strolling through the wine aisle at the grocery store on a random Saturday morning and someone’s offering you a shot of vodka. After a long week of racing around chasing short people, it’s nice to see someone’s looking out for YOU for a change. See, that’s how our grocery store rolls. Some supermarkets pass out cheese cube samples; ours passes out liquor samples. It was on one such Saturday morning last year that I sampled one of the most awesome holiday cocktails I’ve ever had right there in the beer aisle of the grocery store.
They’re called “Holly Berries” because they turn out to be red in color after mixing all the ingredients together. When you first start drinking them, you can’t even tell you’re drinking something with alcohol in it. It is that sweet and that smooth. You’ll reach the bottom of your glass faster than you thought was even possible and be asking for more and more of them. And herein lies both the beauty and the danger of this special festive cocktail. It will suddenly sneak up and bite you right in the ass when you least expect it.
I first made a batch last December when my brother-in-law and sister-in-law came up for a visit. Two pitchers later, we were all as loaded as Santa’s weighted down sleigh. I made them again on Christmas Eve for my mother-in-law and my parents, and once again, we had a house full of sloshed guests. When I made them again down in Florida on New Year’s Eve, we went through so many pitchers that my husband had to run across the street to the liquor store to buy more ingredients. They were a huge hit! Needless to say, we were one hungover bunch on the first day of the new year. It was at this point that I decided this potent punch needed a much more suitable name. I now refer to them as “HOLY Berries!”, as in “Holy shit, these things are tasty!” and “Holy shit, these things go down easy!” and “Holy shit, these things are strong!” and “Holy shit, I’m completely snockered!” and “Holy shit, why did I drink so many damn Holy Berries?”
So, by now, you’re probably dying to know just how you might make these fantastically delicious HOLY Berries, aren’t you? Well, lucky for you, I’m giving you the secret to a guaranteed good time at any holiday gathering you might be hosting this holiday season. Hold onto your sobriety, folks, cause here’s the how-to:
- 3 cups Bacardi Limon
- 3 cups cranberry juice
- 3 cups sweet & sour
- 1 cup fresh mint leaves (chopped)
- Shake 4 oz of mix vigorously to break up the mint.
- Strain into a chilled martini glass.
- Garnish with a skewer of fresh cranberries & a mint sprig (but only if you’re fancy, which I am not, so I skip this part).
